People Receiving Medicaid
What does this measure?
The percentage of people enrolled in Medicaid, the government–funded health insurance program for the poor and disabled.
Why is this important?
This measure shows the proportion of people dependent upon government for health insurance because they cannot access affordable insurance through jobs or other means.
How are Cayuga and Seneca counties performing?
In 2010, 18% of Cayuga residents and 15% of Seneca residents were enrolled in Medicaid, similar to the statewide (excluding NYC) rate of 15%. Rates in both counties have risen since 2000, when both had a rate of 9%. Similar trends occurred in comparison counties and at the state level, reflecting in part the state expanding eligibility criteria to make Medicaid available to more people. Ontario had the lowest rate of Medicaid enrollment (13%) and Oswego had the highest (22%).
